It’s no secret that in the fashion industry I am quite the rarity – a female fashion photographer AND mummy! With female fashion photographers in the minority I wanted to find out who is in my sisterhood, who are my counterparts, what their subjects represent and how their subjects are represented?
Below is my summary of 10 female fashion photographers – both old and new – who I continue to be inspired by, am in awe of and recommend if you’re not following, then do.
Emma Summerton:
I have been a huge fan of Emma’s photography since she started gaining recognition in London many moons ago. Originally from Australia Emma’s creativity was initially expressed through painting. Emma’s work represents a sexy, strong woman with a definitive sense of style. Her images are bold and colourful with a unique blend of photography and fine art.

Chen Man:
Originating from China Chen is a powerhouse that has turned the fashion and beauty world on its head in China. Her images are stunning, bold, bright, strong and her technical understanding of photography is next to none. A fashion photographer to watch.

Ruth Hogben:
Former Nick Knight assistant Ruth works with both stills and motion. Her images are on the cutting edge of the industries visionaries. If you are not already following her, then she is one to watch.

Candice Lake:
I am in total awe of Candice’s achievements. A former model, not only is she a hugely successful photographer but she also has an amazing blog, is a global ambassador to TRESemmé, has her own fashion label, is a mum of – almost – 2 bubba’s and is Australian – I might be being biased here but what a woman!

Carly Foulkes:
Carly has a beautiful sense of openness in her imagery that is very refreshing. A true artist she uses a well-balanced mix of multimedia to create her artwork. Carly’s work also has a great undertone of humour running through her imagery, just one more reason why I really love her work.

Cass Bird:
Female Fashion Photographer Cass Bird has this way of making you feel like you just want to be in her pictures. Her work represents the carefree, fun, warm, romantic and effortlessly beautiful world we all aspire to live in. Love it!

Emily Knecht:
Oh my goodness Emily Knecht, what a photographer. Emily’s work shows the beauty of raw emotion, documenting vulnerability at its best. Emily takes the camera into places most would feel invasive but the results are phenomenal. Her belief in ‘stop hiding emotion but instead photograph and share it’ lead her to the series where she turns the camera on herself for 3 years and took a selfie every time she cried. Love!

Karina Twiss:
Former assistant to Solve Sundsbo Karina shoots the most beautiful fashion and beauty images. Highly technical Karina has the ability to use colour in a way that most would shy away from. Her subjects are a balance of being soft yet strong, editorial yet commercial.

Venetia Scott:
Venetia started her career as a stylist working for British Vogue alongside famed Photographers Juergen Teller, David Sims, Corrine Day and Helmut Newton. Moving into Photography full time in 2005 Venetia has the most ethereal and soft yet calm way of photographing her subjects.

Ellen Von Unwerth:
A female fashion photographer list wouldn’t be complete without famed photographer Ellen Von Unwerth. Known for her striking female images Ellen’s photography represent a playful, strong and erotic femininity. If you’re not familiar with Ellen’s work, make sure you check it out!
