Women of the UAE

Women of the UAE is the first portrait photography coffee table book focusing on the inner-beauty of all women and their contribution to the region.

As the second project to focus on the notion of beauty and women empowerment, this portrait photography book showcases an eclectic mix of both Emirati & expatriates.

  • “When I first arrived in the UAE I was constantly being asked by my international friends ‘what is it like?’, ‘do you have to cover?’, ‘are you allowed to work, drive?’… the questions we endless. This book is the marriage of these continual questions with my own quest to show beauty comes from within”.

Women of the UAE is a visual time-capsule and cross-cultural communication tool which is now being used by both the Australian Embassy and UNWomen Abu Dhabi as state gifts as well as being sold in all major book stores across the UAE. Women of the UAE aims to break down stereotypes, give women the confidence to use their voice and celebrate who they really are.

If there is one lasting memory you will be left with from this book… is that beauty comes from within.

Testimonials – here are some words of support from people around the globe:

“But tonight belongs to Charney and to the women who appear in her book and in this exhibition. They are all driven by the belief, as articulated by Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi, that “the education and empowerment of women throughout the world cannot fail to result in a more caring, tolerant, just and peaceful life for all”. The world needs more of such inspirational women. It is to this goal that we should re-commit ourselves on this the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day.”

Opening speech for Charney’s Women of the UAE book launch and exhibition in 2012 by His Excellency Pablo Kang, Australian Ambassador to the UAE and Qatar.

“A fabulous collection of portraits showing women glowing with intelligence, humour, and beauty.”

    Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan
